Alex Gottesman (Classics) will lead a discussion around the old question, "Did Socrates have it coming?" By looking closely at the Apology and certain passages of the Republic, alongside some passages of Xenophon, we will consider the extent to which the Athenians in 399 BCE might have felt (and been!) justified in executing the old philosopher. To do that we will have to read between the lines to recover the case the prosecution would have made, as well as consider the historical context in which the trial took place.
